The image of Spain
that most people have, is straight out of the holiday brochures, sun
sand and sangria. What many people don't realise is that there is
another Spain, a land of mountain villages and rugged coastlines.

The north of Spain
is green and bears no resemblance to the holiday destinations usually
offered by the travel agents. This area of Spain is off the
beaten track for most tourists but recently, cheap air travel to some
of the remoter Spanish airports has made the region more accessible.

The region is
dominated by the Picos de Europa mountain range, which divides the hot
arid regions in the south and the cooler green Spain of the north.
The "green" regions include Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria the Basque
country, Navarre and the northern parts of Aragon. Here you will
find a country of spectacular coastlines, lush countryside, mountains
and valleys, all virtually untouched by tourists from outside Spain.
