Ever fancied angling in Spain? For sea anglers Spain has
coastlines on the Atlantic and the Mediterranean while inland there
is a wide variety of game and course fishing from lakes and rivers.
Most organised sea fishing on the Costas is from chartered
boat companies and despite the common belief about the Med being
void of fish, there is a lot of good sport to be had. Species
including tuna, sea bream, sea bass, gilt head bream, mackerel and
conger are quite plentiful.
For course fishing the
regions of Aragon and Extremedura are probably the best.
Aragon
The
river Ebro which flows through parts of Aragon is Spain's
longest river and when it
comes to coarse fishing, you won't find much better anywhere.
Carp and catfish angling is the main attraction with carp over 40lb
and regular catches of 100lb plus catfish. The record for the
catfish is currently 225lbs but this is likely to be broken soon.
The hours allowed for angling on the Ebro are a bit restrictive and
are enthusiastically enforced by the Guardia Civil. For carp
you can fish from 6am until one hour after darkness and for catfish
6am until midnight. Most of the carp and catfish angling
holidays on the Ebro are in the provinces of Aragon and
Catalunya. There are now many companies offering all inclusive carp
and catfish angling in these areas.
Extremadura
With its lakes, rivers and lagoons the remote region of Extremadura
offers some truly outstanding angling. Huge Carp and Barbel
abound in this beautiful wilderness. The two top Carp venues
are the Orellana and Sierra Brava which are dammed sections of the
River Guadiana. As well as holding the Spanish Carp record,
many other fish over 70lbs have been caught in these waters.
Because of its remoteness, many of these fish have never seen a
boilie. The Comizo Barbel unlike the species found in the UK can
grow to over 40lbs, truly amazing fish from a spectacular area.
This region was once so off the beaten track that very few anglers
from the UK ever ventured here. Luckily today, there are a few
specialist companies offering angling holidays in these outstanding
venues.

Big Carp

Apart from the
Ebro, Spain offers many other coarse and fly fishing holidays.
Some of the best fishing in Spain can be had in the Ruidera area of
Castile and Leon. This area has a chain of fourteen lagoons
which are home to carp, pike, huge barbel and black bass. To read

Pyrenees
The
Pyrenees region is full of sparkling rivers where trout abound and
licenses are easily obtained from local bars. Even in the
sunbaked south of the Coata Blanca and Costa del Sol there are good
areas for trout and barbel to be found. The Amadorio dam in
Guadalest has some big trout, as well as black bream. Galicia
the seafood goumet's paradise has some excellent sea fishing and
beautiful rivers and streams where excellent trout fishing is
available. A license is required for course and fly fishing in
most areas of Spain.
Northern Spain
In the north of Spain, there's some great sea
fishing off the rugged coastline of Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and
the Basque Country. Being tidal unlike the Mediterranean bait
is easily dug at low water. There are numerous species of fish
caught including Dorada (sea bream) and Lubina (sea bass)
