RONCESVALLES

Roncesvalles is a major stopping point on the pilgrims route from Pamplona to Santiago de Compostella. Situated on the the border between France and Spain, it was the site of a large battle in 778 between the Basques and the army of Charlemagne who were slaughtered on their way  home to France.  One of the main attractions of the town today is the 13th century Colegiata Real church which contains, amongst other interesting artefacts, the chess set of Charlemagne.  The Gothic church was copied from the French Notre Dame cathedral in Paris.  It has served as a place of refuge over the centuries for the pilgrims on their way to Santiago.
