PAMPLONA

Pamplona is the capital city of the Navarre region.  It is best known for its annual bull run in which bulls are released into the narrow streets in a mad stampede to the bull ring.  Brave (or stupid) people, many fuelled by alcohol, mingle with the bulls, some getting trampled in the process.  This rather primitive ritual has become a focal point for animal rights campaigners in recent years, with at least one (Debbie Moore) being severely gored in the process.  Apart from the bull run, the city has quite a rich history.  It is said to have been founded by the Roman general Pompey in the 9th century.  The best view of the city is from the ancient city walls.  The  cathedral built on the site of its 12th century predecessor overlooks the Rio Arga below.
