The Roman town of
Olite later became home to the kings of Navarre. This small
town is dominated by the Palacio Real which was built in the early
15th century. Olite is known as the "Gothic Town" because of the
castle palace. The palace was decorated internally by
Mudejar craftsmen with ceramic tile and a marquetry ceilings.
The walkways were planted with orange trees and vines and there was
also an aviary and a lions den.

The castle was
ransacked by the French in the 19th century and restoration began in
1920. The town itself is a fantastic jumble of narrow cobbled
streets, small squares and churches surrounded by the old Roman
walls.
