NAVARRE

The Navarre region of Spain is another of Spain's green areas.  Bordering on France as well as the Spanish regions of La Rioja, Castile and Leon, the Basque Country and Aragon, Navarre is an area of contrasts.  Near the border with France the area is mountainous.  Beautiful villages, meadows, rivers and forests are all features.  The Navarre Pyrenees are a nature lovers paradise, many species of wild flowers, birds and animals can be found in the area.  Navarre was once an independent kingdom before changing hands to French rule and then back again to Spanish rule.  As late as the 1800's Navarre had its own laws and currency.  The capital city of the region is Pamplona, best known for the annual bull runs. The language of  Navarre is mostly Catalan Spanish with some pockets near the border of the Basque Country retaining the Basque language.
