Murcia produces some excellent wines notably from the Jumilla region. The vineyards are situated on a high plateau in a mountainous area. The principal grape is the Monastrell which is particularly suited to the conditions in the region. The
Monastrell grape produces deep ruby red wines which are either drunk young or are aged in oak barrels (crianza) Some of these older wines have caused quite a stir in wine tasting cicles. Jumilla also have a long tradition of producing strong (12%) rosés.
