The Mar Menor
"little lake" in the province of Murcia, are
a series of large
salt water lagoons, which form a large lake, seperated from the
Mediterranean by a long thin
strip of land called La Manga "the sleeve". Covering an area
of 170 sq kms this is the largest salt water lake in Europe.
The Romans used the Mar Menor to produce salt. There was an early
form of tourism to the area in the early 20th century when it was
widely believed that being rich in iodine, the waters and minerals
of the lake had health improving qualities. A couple of
resorts developed from this influx of people. The main resort
today is San Pedro del Pinetar which faces the Mar Menor.
Being only five minutes from Murcia airport, it is popular with
visitors from around Europe. |
