CARTAGENA

Cartagena is an ancient port city founded in 225 BC by the Carthaginians who named it Quart Hadas. The Romans renamed the town Cathago Nova (new Carthage)  The city became less important over the centuries until in the 18th century it became a major naval base. Surrounding the ruins of the Castillo de la Conception is a park which gives a good overview of the city. On the quayside stands a prototype submarine built by Issac Peral in 1888.  Some remains have been excavated including a Roman street  and a Byzantine wall built between 589 and 590.
