VALLE DE LOS CAÍDOS

A huge cross dominates the countryside around the Valle de los Caidos in Madrid province. The cross was built on the orders of General Franco to commemorate those who died in the Spanish Civil war.  It took 16 years to build the cross, which is 490ft high. There is a lift up to the top of the cross where there are magnificent views over the surrounding countryside.
