The de Suso monastery was built in the 10th
century on a site which was founded in 537 by St Emilian who was a
hermit and shepherd. Made from a beautiful pink sandstone, it
has mostly Romanesque features. The Monastery is home to the tombs
of St Emilian and Gonzalo de Berceo a 13th century writer who also
lived there as a monk. The monastery de Yuso below the de Suso
was built between the 16th and 18th century on a site which was
formerly an older monastery. Both monasteries are well worth a
visit as they contain some ancient artifacts including a collection
of ivory plaques which were once part of a collection belonging to
an 11th century reliquary. There are also medieval manuscripts
dating back to the 10th century. In 1997 the monasteries were
granted UNESCO world heritage status.
