LA RIOJA
La Rioja is
Spain's most famous wine producing region. The province of La
Rioja is the smallest in Spain. It is divided into two regions
Rioja alto and Rioja bajo (high and low) The capital, Logroņo is the
main distribution point for the regions wines. One of the
famous pilgrim routes, the Camino Frances starts in the medieval
town of Santo Domingo de la Calzada, which is well worth a
visit in its own right. The town has a maze of narrow streets
and a beautiful cathedral. St Dominic built a hospital here in
the 11th century to help pilgrims on their route to Santiago de
Compestela. This still exists but has been converted into a
parador. The parador (Parador de Santo Domingo) is situated in the
plaza del Santo: telephone 0034 941 22 22 00.
The parador offers a
large imposing lounge divided by arches and a beautiful carved
ceiling.
Miracles performed
by St Dominic have been recorded on the walls of his tomb in the
cathedral. also Inside the cathedral set in the walls is an
impressively decorated cage in which there is a live cock and hen.
This is a tradition which has been maintained for many centuries.
Because of its
fertile land and proximity to the River Ebro, in addition to it's
grapes, La Rioja produces a wide variety of vegetables including
aubergines, tomatoes and peppers. The regional cuisine consists of a
variety of meat vegetable and fish dishes.
The nearest
airport in the region is situated near the capital
Logroņo. There
are a number of hotels, bars and restaurants in Logroņo which
would make a good base for exploring the region.
