Built around
ancient thermal springs, the city of Ourense dates back to before
Roman times. Ourense is also one of Galicia's provinces. The
old town of Ourense has a medieval section which is popular with
tourists and is home to the cathedral which was originally built in
572 and subsequently rebuilt between the 12th and 15th century.

The remains of the
Roman springs are still intact including the water outlets. A little
north of the city is a famous arched bridge the "Puente Romano"
which still has its original Roman foundations. For anybody
with walking difficulties, contemplating a visit to Ourense, it is
worth noting that much of the town is on a incline.
