La Coruña or A
Coruña
is one of Galicia's two largest
cities, the other being
Santiago de Compostela.
Coruña is a port city which is situated close to the border of
Portugal on the Costa de Morte or death coast. One of Coruña's
claims to fame is that Picasso lived there as a boy between 1891 and
1895. You won't find any monuments to Picasso in Coruña
because there aren't any, the nearest you'll get is a plaque on the
wall of a third story apartment at 14 Payo Gomez st acknowledging
the fact that he once lived there. What you may find is a bar
named the Picasso in the Orzan district. The bar is decorated
with black and white pictures of Picasso and since it began in 1985
the area has become chic with many other bars and restaurants
opening nearby. La Coruña is amongst Spain's most important
ports. It is one of the main stop over's for the many
cruise ships which frequent the area. There is a small airport
8kms from the centre of Coruña which handles mostly internal flights
from other parts of Spain. The regions main airport is
Santiago de Compostela. La Coruña is an historic city but is
modern and commercial at the same time.
