With its mountains, lakes, meadows, flowers and wildlife, Extremadura is the perfect location for long walks. One or two companies specialise in walking holidays in this area but owing to its location, getting there is not easy. With no
international airport, and poor rail links, this area, at least for the time being will probably remain unspoiled by tourism. If you have plenty time on your hands, the quickest route would be a flight to Madrid followed by a fairly long car journey then a stop over in somewhere like Caceres.

FERIA CASTLE
From Caceres you could then decide which area you would like to explore. The area near the border of Portugal is the most scenic. There are fantastic displays of wild flowers, castles and other places of historic interest. Extremadura is also a bird spotters paradise.

Bird spotting trips
and organised holidays are available to the area from a few places. It isn't unusual to see birds like the Spanish imperial eagle, the great bustard or the black vulture. Wildlife abounds in Extremadura, there are wild boars, deer and if you're lucky you may spot a lynx. This area is one of
the most unspoiled parts of Spain, if not the whole of Europe.
