A "must see" for any traveler to
Extremadura is the ancient Roman city of Mérida. In 25
bc the Romans founded Mérida
under the rule of Augustus, when the
city was known as Augusta Emerita . The region prospered and
grew and at one time was the capital of Rome's most Westerly
province, Lusitania. The city fell to the Moors but many of
the Roman remains stayed intact and today Mérida
is Spain's most important Roman city. Although small, Mérida
is the capital of Extremadura.
The Roman remains
include a Roman theatre which is still in use today, an amphitheatre
on the same site. The nearby Roman house "casa
del anfiteatro" has an extremely well
preserved mosaic floor. Perhaps one of the most impressive
remains is the arched Lusitania bridge.
