ANGLING IN EXTREMADURA

ANGLING IN EXTREMADURA
|
With its lakes, rivers and lagoons
the remote region of Extremadura offers some truly outstanding
angling. Huge Carp and Barbel abound in this beautiful
wilderness. The two top Carp venues are the Orellana and
Sierra Brava which are dammed sections of the River Guadiana.
As well as holding the Spanish Carp record, many other fish over
70lbs have been caught in these waters. Because of its
remoteness, many of these fish have never seen a boilie. The
Comizo Barbel unlike the species found in the UK can grow to over
40lbs, truly amazing fish from a spectacular area. This
region was once so off the beaten track that very few anglers from
the UK ever ventured here. Luckily today, there are a few
specialist companies offering angling holidays in these
outstanding venues. |

Extrema Fishing Spain
The longest
established and most experienced Extremadura guided angling
holiday company is without doubt
Extrema Fishing, run by 43 year old Craig Reid. Craig
arrived in Extremedura after five years catching Carp on the river
Ebro, another of Spain's top venues. With over 28 years of
experience in Carp fishing, Craig is the ideal guide for an
angling adventure you won't forget. Below are some of the

Fishing on Sierra Brava and Orellana |
Sierra Brava
The
very picturesque Sierra Brava is an exciting venue to fish with
regular runs from hard fighting doubles and fish to upper 30´s; it
regularly produces fish around the 65lb mark, over the next few
years we expect this venue to produce a record Carp.
This partially stocked lake is an easy water to
get runs and we would expect most guests to land 30lb+ fish. It ’s
stuffed with fish between 10lb to 40lb but there’s
always that anticipation of a monster carp will flatten your rod
whilst heading for freedom.

A very picturesque and relatively young lake,
constructed in 1996, it covers some 1650 hectares and is 9 KM in
length. It offers a variation of fishing with large open bays and
areas with sunken trees that provide perfect conditions for snag
fishing.
The Brava is a cracking
winter venue, 17 runs to one angler in a single day session in
February with fish to 35lb.

probably Spain's top location to offer the likelihood of catching
a record carp, it has already produced several 70lb plus fish.
Orellana carp are natural fauna fish that have dwelled undisturbed
in this wonderful lake which is over 45 years old, the chance they
have ever seen a hook before is unlikely.
These Carp are probably the hardest fighting

The Orellana is not a
stocked lake: it is the natural home to huge shoals of natural
carp. Formed in 1961 by the damming of the River Guadiana it is a
37km long lake of 5084 hectares. Not the easiest of waters, this
flooded valley with its impressive bays, deep gullies and silt
plateau, provides a naturally waterscape for carp.
Being the lower of three
adjacent lakes, the Orellana has a reputation of having the
cleanest water in Spain. The fantastic water quality supports an
abundance of natural food including a huge population of crayfish.
This inturn provides the sufficient staple diet required to
sustain such a large number of big Carp.

Having researched,
studied and fished this incredible location for nearly 5 years,
our expert knowledge of this water will assist you in having a
Carp Fishing experience you willl not forget. We have partnered

Here Are Some
Testimonials From Happy Extrema Fishing Customers
Extrema Carp Fishing - 16th - 23rd November
2008.
What a 40th birthday present off the mrs - she’d
bought me a fishing holiday.
The
fishing had been truly awesome with a 30lb carp smashing my PB by
over 10lb. In a lake that size it still seems like a miracle
thinking about it now. With Craig’s vast knowledge of the
lake, sound advice and steely determination your chances of
catching couldn’t be any better. Fin perfect, pristine
condition, ‘never caught before’ carp are the stuff dreams are
made of. With the sun and mist rising in the morning,
vultures circling at midday and a truly magnificent display of
stars at night you couldn’t beat this for a location to spend a
weeks carp fishing. Craig and Sarah couldn’t of done anymore
to make this holiday any better. They are a great couple, we
had lots of laughs, we’ve made 2 new friends and will definitely
be going back! Mart & Al
Hi Craig n Sarah, It was an
experience you cherish especially when you have caught a few lumps
previous both in the uk and France.
As you would know the first capture is always a relief and of
course boosts your confidence, I remember the following morning
very clearly and I believe the phrase I used was I've never been
so beaten up by a fish before as I was that night I honestly did
think this could be the new lake record, unfortunately it fell a
bit short of that, but how can a fish that size literately bring
you to your knees. if I had known what was to follow the next
night I think I would have definitely had a work out lol in
readiness, exhausted doesn't begin to describe it, four twenties
in one night, brilliant. The Orellana, wow an amazing place with
awesome fish, my advice to anyone who visits would be, be prepared
to pit your wits against probably the hardest fighting carp your
will ever encounter anywhere in the world, oh and of course make
sure you have the food package! Sarah's chilly is legendary, the
fish may of not been moving, but my bowels certainly were lol,
thanks Sarah. meeting the other lads was great and always
interesting, I look forward to meeting up with Andy some day, who
knows maybe at the Orellana, a great guy.
From start to finish the entire trip was top draw, the venue was
awesome and I enjoyed the local atmosphere and hospitality at the
hotel. your guidance clearly reflects the hard work you have put
in and anyone who gets involved with a charity event deserves
respect. it was a pleasure meeting you both and you will see me
again, that's for sure. rock on the source lol.
regards rob
This was Tony and Roy's 4th trip with Craig and
the crew, our second in the Extremadura Region .
Each trip
just gets better and better. As alway's Craig put us on the fish
from day one. [Boy does this Guy work his Rocks off to make sure
his guests catch ]
Also if
you want a great social evening [or two ] Craig won't let you
down. On one night out craig introduced us to two of his personal
friends, the Mayor elect of one Town and the current Mayor of
another no less. Apart from being good company they are both keen
to promote the Region to Angler's from the UK. This can only be
good news for anyone considering making the trip.
Apart
from unusually extreme weather conditions for the time of the year
[ Who said the sun always shines in Spain ] and the Carp and
Barbel spawning late, the overall fishing was truly superb.
Roy
caught Barbel from 5.5lbs to 8.5lbs [average 7lbs] a new personal
best. Carp from 15.5lbs to 39.25lbs another PB [average 23lbs].
Tony [Man
of Action] had great sport on feeder including 42 Cat Fish on one
session [ a PB he can keep ]. When not feeder fishing {or asleep]
he also caught Barbel to 11lbs a new personal best and Carp to
24lbs.
If you think the Carp at home scrap well, do
yourselves a favor and book a trip with Craig and see for yourself
how hard these pristine condition natural Carp fight. A real
adrenalin rush.
Sorry Craig, but I am determined to catch a
double figure Barbel and beat your current PB of 39.5lbs. [Can't
believe I lost out by 0.25oz ] and to Tony winning the draw for
next run and getting that 11lb Barbel. So it means that you will
have to put up with me again in November 2007 [the weather can't
be any worse can it?.] Tony and I will also both be back in2008.
Sorry it took so long, but
thanks for a great week's fishing we had with you. Adam really
enjoyed it and keeps on about it. My hand and my head soon
healed up, although I haven't touched a drop of brandy since.
We learnt a good deal about carp fishing and how it applies to
barbel and I am slowly getting some more specialist tackle and
accessories together, as well as catching some carp on
semifixed bolt rigs. I have even located some embalses that
are stocked with carp and barbel in Portugal and the Huelva
region in Spain, where we have our apartment, so I intend to
gear-up down there as well.
Below
is a recommendation but I couldn't give one for the hotel. If
there is one with a better standard of service and comfort
available next year, I would love to come again, if you would
have us of course. End tackle would not be a problem as I know
what to bring next time.
Many
thanks again Craig for all of your help, advice and for
looking after us so well in Extremadura. Without you it would
not have been possible to catch carp and barbel you only dream
about
Mike Bourne
