Extemadura is the real Spain. This region which lies between Portugal
to the west
and Castilla la mancha to the east also borders with Andalucia and Castile and Leon. Most summer tourists to Spain head to the Costa Blanca or Costa del Sol and this area has not been touched by the tourist industry. The area is largely rural, huge expanses of meadows
interspersed with small, almost deserted villages reminiscent of a bygone age. Some of the whitewashed villages could have come straight out of a Clint Eastwood western.
Extremadura is home to an abundance of nature reserves which are the habitat of a variety of animals and birds. Extremadura is a large province and Lagoons, lakes, forests and mountains festoon the countryside. There are two provinces within the region
of Extremadura, Caceres to the north and Badajoz in the south. The capital of the Caceres province is the city of Caceres and in the south Badajoz. The capital of the whole of Extremadura is the historic Roman city of
Mérida

The Romans occupied Extremadura which is home to some of the most impressive Roman remains in Spain. The city of Merida contains a wealth of Roman archeology including an amphitheatre and a bridge which is reputedly the longest Roman arched bridge in
Spain.
