Catalonia or
Catalunya is split into five provinces, Tarragona,
Andorra, Girona, Lleida and Barcelona province. It shares a border
with France and has internal borders with the regions of Aragon and
Valencia. It has tried to claim independence from the rest of
Spain throughout its recent history and has a strong local identity
with its own language Catalan.
The coastline is home to the Costa Brava and Costa Dorada. The
Costa Brava gave birth to Spain's first mass tourism in the 1960's
and resorts like Lloret de Mar are still very popular today.
Inland, there are many historic places of interest, especially
Roman. The Romans set up their regional capital of Tarragona
when they invaded the Iberian Peninsular. Another major
historical sight is the monastery of Montserrat. The most visited
city in Spain outside Madrid is the capital of Catalonia, Barcelona.
Barcelona is now the weekend break city. Barcelona is crammed full
of places to go and things to see. Spain's largest river the
Rio Ebro flows through the region.
