Formerly the
Roman town of Turrisa, Tossa de Mar is quieter than the
bustling Llloret de Mar with fewer high rise blocks and a less
frantic atmosphere. Tossa was one of the original Costa Brava towns
singled out for tourist development in the late 60's. Back in
the mid seventies it was extremely popular with UK holidaymakers
many of whom arrived by coach. Since the heyday of the
seventies,
package holidays have tailed off quite significantly, with many of
today's tourists planning their own flights and accommodation.
Although still busy, tourism from the UK has tailed off quite
significantly. Tossa has some of the prettiest coastline on
the Costa Brava and the old town has a maze of narrow cobbled
streets and an ancient castle. Tossa is still extremely
popular with Spanish and other European holidaymakers with many
visitors returning year after year.
