SAGRADA FAMÍLA BARCELONA
The
Sagrada Familia is the emblem of Barcelona a city which prides
itself on individualism. Gaudi's most famous building, the Sagrada
Familia or sacred family is a monument to the genius of one of
Spain's most famous architects. The unfinished cathedral was started
in 1882 and is one of Barcelona's main tourist attractions.
This is a cathedral unlike any other with Gaudi's unmistakable
trademark everywhere. The architecture is truly spectacular and
almost too much to take in. Work began on what was supposed to
be a Neo Gothic church in 1883. A year later, the project was
handed over to Gaudi who immediately changed the plans to suit his
unique style. The cathedral was now Gaudi's life work and he
became a recluse spending every day for the next sixteen years
living on the site. The unfinished cathedral is Gaudi's burial
place. By the time he died, only one tower on the nativity
facade had been completed, since his death several more have
been finished. The work continues today, funded by public
donations
