The magnificent
city of Toledo Spain is the regional capital of Castilla La Mancha.
To fully appreciate Toledo, you need at least two days. There
are so many historic sites and places of interest to see that
any less would not do it justice. Toledo was founded in Roman
times and was inhabited by the Visigoths in the 6th century AD who
made it their capital. The medieval part of the city is
dominated by the beautiful cathedral.

Work commenced on
the cathedral in 1226 on the site of an old church. It was
completed in 1493, three centuries after the work began. The
Alcazar palace of Charles V stands on the site of a Roman fort.
It was almost destroyed in 1936 after a siege by the republicans.
The restoration carefully followed the original plans, it is now
home to an army museum.

There are guided
walks available through the city which are well worth the cost.
Many tours are available for three or four days which take in
other parts of the region. Most tours start and return to
Madrid. From Toledo the rail links to other parts of Spain are
non existent, so Madrid has to be the start and finish point.
An excellent city break would be to take in Madrid, with all its
sights and nightlife and incorporate a short one or two day tour of
Toledo.
