Cuenca is a historic Moorish town sitting astride a steeply sided
spur which drops abruptly on either side into the deep gorges of the
rio Júcar and Huécar. The 12th century Gothic cathedral
dominates this town of narrow winding streets.

The
other major attraction are the hanging houses. These have been
built clinging to the side of the cliff and in some cases with
balconies protruding out . The occupants of these houses must
put great faith in the quality of workmanship that went into these
buildings, any balcony collapse would mean certain death.
Cuenca is full of historic buildings, beautiful squares and park
areas. The tourist industry has now latched on to the
potential of Cuenca and it has succumbed to the usual paraphernalia
of souvenir shops. Having said that it is still well worth a
visit. |
