Not much remains of Zamora's historical past. Zamora was an important Roman frontier town on the via de la plata, the main route connecting Andalucia with the north of Spain. During the reconquest of Spain the area saw some fierce battles. The town now
sprawls far beyond its original borders but the old town remains more or less intact with many old churches. A beautiful parador now occupies the site of a palace. There are two other palaces, the Casa de los Momos and the Casa del Cordón. The most important historic building in Zamora is
the 12th century cathedral.
