Leon was originally built on a camp occupied by the Roman seventh legion. In the middle ages it became the capital of a kingdom. The city's magnificent Gothic cathedral was started in the 13th century and completed less than 100 years later. Apart
from the cathedral other areas of interest are the Panteón Real which is the final resting place of more than twenty monarchs, it is superbly decorated with carvings which depict life in the middle ages.
