Burgos, the capital city of the Burgos region is close to the border with La Rioja. Burgos cathedral, Spain's third largest, dates from 1221 and took three hundred years to complete. The cathedral is one of the best examples of Gothic architecture in
Spain, it is also home to the tomb of one of Spain's early heroes, El Cid.

Apart from the cathedral Burgos has a lot of other places of interest for visitors. The castle like arco de Santa Maria is an impressive archway with turrets which were used to guard the entrance to the city. Most of
the historic monuments in Burgos are extremely well preserved.
