The Roman name for Astorga was Asturica Augusta.  It was a strategic Roman town on the via de la plata a Roman road linking Andalucia with the north of Spain.  The town's impressive  cathedral was built between the 15th and 18th century and is a mixture of different styles, it is the domineering landmark standing high above the city ramparts.
