The port of
Santander is home to the car ferries which travel through the bay of
Biscay to the UK. This is where many touring holidays begin.
To reach the south of Spain when traveling from the UK
the journey by road through France takes about 24hrs. To
anybody who has never driven this distance, beware, its a very long
drive! The last time I made the journey by road we did it non
stop and I vouched never to do it again. If you want to tour
Spain by car, it is far cheaper to fly and then hire a car when you
arrive. If you have a motor home or feel you have to use your
own car, the choice is between driving through France or
taking the ferry from Plymouth to Santander. The ferry journey
takes about twenty hours and the bay of Biscay can be extremely
choppy. A cabin is recommended although you can choose a
reclining chair to save some cash. The price of traveling by
road and traveling by ferry works out very similar when the toll
prices, petrol and an overnight stop are taken into account but at
least with the ferry, you should arrive refreshed. Many people
using the ferry drive straight off and onto the motorway connections
heading south. If you have time to spare, I would strongly
recommend exploring the north coast including Cantabria Asturias and
the Basque country. This area of Spain has fantastic scenery
and is well worth the visit. |
