Tenerife is home
to no fewer than five D.O wine producing areas. The best
quality grapes are grown in the area of Albona in the southeast of
the island at a height of between 300 and 1,700 meters. The Valle de
la Orotava on the north coast is more open to Atlantic winds which
affects the growing conditions. These vineyards are on a low
level. The oldest vineyards on Tenerife are to be found in
Tacoronte-Acentejo in the northwest.
These vineyards are from sea level to 1000 meters. These were
the first vineyards to be awarded the "Mark of Origin" in 1992.
Tenerife is best known for its sweet reds produced from the Malvasia
grape. In total, there are 33 grape varieties
grown in Tenerife. It is hard to find wine from Tenerife
outside the Canary Islands. |
