Puerto de la Cruz is the most popular resort in the north of
Tenerife. It has a relaxed atmosphere and the air feels clean
and fresh. The long promenade runs along the Atlantic coast
with some spectacular waves crashing against the sea wall.
Mount Teide dominates Puerto de la Cruz the peak can be capped with
snow during the winter months. Excursions to Teide are
popular, they are usually made with six or eight seater veichles
which can handle the mountain road to the top. On reaching the
summit, the view is crystal clear, as if a veil has been lifted.
This is because of the altitude and lack of pollution. There
is a chair lift up to the rim of the volcano. The last major
eruption was in 1909 but there have been smaller eruptions since.
The area around the summit is rock strewn and barren with a few
cactus type plants and flowers. The film 1000 BC starring
Raquel Welch was made here.

THE BLACK SAND OF
TENERIFE
PHOTOGRAPH BY SANTIAGO VILA
Many people are
surprised when they arrive in Tenerife that the beaches have black
sand. This is volcanic ash which has been ground to sand over
the centuries. Being the Atlantic, the island has some great
surfing with competitions taking place on many of the beaches.
There is one beach in Tenerife with golden sand, this is Terasitas.

This is a man made
beach which was created with 4 million sacks of sand imported from
the Sahara desert. Puerto de la Cruz has a lovely inlet where
small fishing boats anchor, there are plenty attractions including
Lorro Park, a very well maintained zoo with a dolphin show and one
of the largest collections of parrots in captivity.

The southern end of the promenade contains
a large seawater lido made up from a series of pools.
During stormy weather, the waves break over the surrounding
wall and into the lido. Puerto de la Cruz is duty free
and there are lots of shops selling cameras, watches and
electrical goods at a fraction of the cost of the mainland.
Holidays
In Puerto de la Cruz
There are a
few different options for holidays in Puerto de la Cruz.
The favourite and one most people choose, package holidays
including flight and hotel. There are plenty hotels and
finding one to fit the bill shouldn't be difficult. Most
hotels these days have buffets instead of set meals.
Some have an amazing array of meat and seafood and
you can eat as much as you like. Obviously, the more you
pay for your hotel, the better the choice. With Tenerife
having a year round mild climate, winter holidays are
especially popular and over Christmas many hotels are booked
up. This year may be different as the credit crunch and
rising prices at home start to bite but if you're
considering going, I wouldn't leave it too late to book.
There are a number of online travel operators offering
packages to Tenerife. One of the biggest is Thomson
Holidays, who as well as doing packages, also offer hotel only
and flight only deals. Thomson Holidays like 99% of all the
tour operators are offering some big discounts at the moment.
If you check out their
Tenerife page here
you
can get an idea of the way prices are going. You can bet
that all the tour operators are reviewing their prices on a
daily basis and although I wouldn't normally advocate leaving
anything to the last minute, I have a gut feeling that this
year, prices are going to tumble. Another option for a
holiday in Tenerife, is booking a self catering apartment
direct from the property owners. Over the past couple of
years, this has become increasingly popular. Don't just
accept the advertised prices, be a bit cheeky and see if you
can negotiate some discount. Don't forget that the
apartment owners are feeling the pinch as well, so in
many cases will be happy to accept a reduced offer. You
can find some apartments to rent on our website
here. You'll need
to organise your own flight. |

Villa Holidays

"If you're
one of the lucky few who are in the market for a villa
holiday, things don't get much better."
This year, even the exclusive villa market
has taken a bit of a nosedive. Most years, sales have
remained fairly steady or have increased but the economic
situation in the UK is now so bad that even at the higher end
of the income scale, people are cutting back. To give
you an example of some of the savings available, the renowned
villa experts
James Villas
are cutting some of their prices by as much as a
whopping 50%.
Car Hire In
Tenerife
Without a doubt,
the best way of seeing Tenerife, is by car. Puerto de la
Cruz make an ideal location for exploring the rest of the
island. A car is the only way to reach some of the more
inaccessible parts off the beaten tourist track.
The roads in Tenerife are very good and renting a car isn't
too nerve racking. There are an awful lot of car rental
companies operating out of Tenerife's main airport and
choosing a decent one shouldn't be too much of a problem.
I always use
easyCar
I
find their prices are always spot on and their website very
easy to use. I also think going for one of the bigger
companies gives you more peace of mind.
