La Palma is the world's steepest island. The base of the island is only 280 square miles but it reaches an altitude of 2,426 meters. This is one of the lushest of the Canary islands. The climate is moist and cool in comparison to some of its neighbours. The interior of the island is a dense forest of pine and laurel trees interspersed with giant ferns. At the centre is the dominant feature of La Caldera de Taburiente a giant volcano with a rim over 8kms wide. The island has been designated a National Park in an bid to preserve its botanical importance. The historical, beautiful and well preserved main town of the island is Santa Cruz de la Palma (pictured above) . It has the elegance of of times gone by with its fine houses and old churches. Mass tourism has not affected La Palma and the few tourists who venture to the island are located mainly in the island's only true resort Los Cancajos.
