El Hierro is the
smallest of the Canary Islands. It has escaped the influx of
mass tourism due to its lack of sandy beaches. The island is
of interest to naturalists, having some of the most varied flora and
fauna to be found in the Canary Islands. El Hierro is the last place
in Spain where the sun sets, being the furthest west of all the
islands. The capital Valverde has a population of just 1600,
it is the only Canary Island capital which is not situated on the
coast. The nearest island to El Hierro is Gomera, 60 kms to
the east. La Restinga is a small fishing village which is used
as a base for the scuba divers who come to the island. The
coast of El Hierro is rocky with a mountainous interior. If
you want a calm relaxed holiday with beautiful sea views, this is
the island for you. El Hierro is one of the last unspoiled
places left in the Canaries and will probably remain an undiscovered
gem. |
