Betancuria is built on a volcano in the centre of the island.  It has a backdrop of volcanic mountains which are in stark contrast to the whitewashed houses.  The town was named after the 15th century conqueror Jean de Bethencourt.  Betancuria is widely accepted as the prettiest village on the island. The church of Santa Maria contains a gilded altar and sacred relics.
