| Of all
Spanish wine, the most famous region is undoubtedly the area which
produces the famous Riojas. The main region producing Rioja wines is
of course the region of La Rioja. However, the Basque country
also produces a few D.O Rioja wines, in the province of Alava on a
small strip of land close to the border with La Rioja. Alava
wineries are home to some well known varieties of D.O Rioja
including Marques de Riscal, Contino, Remelluri, Faustino
Martinez, Palacio and Campillo. Apart from the well known Riojas the
region also produces a light fruity red known as "harvester's wine".
There are three other very small wine producing regions of the
Spanish Basque Country making predominantly white wines named
txakoli (pronounced chakoli) These white wines are difficult to find
outside the Basque region. Mostly drunk with seafood they are crisp
and slightly tart.
