VITORIA

Vitoria or Gasteiz is the capital of the Basque Country and the home of the Basque government.  It was built on a hill in the province's highest point on the remins of the ancient town of Gasteiz.  The oldest part of the city El Campo Suso, is the sight of a victorious battle with a Moorish army. The main historical building in the old town is the Plaza de la virgen blanca which houses a monument to commemorate a battle in which the Duke of Wellington defeated a French army in 1813.  On the hillside above the plaza is the church of San Miguel which contains a statue of the Virgen Blanca the patron saint of the city.  Other historic buildings in the old part are the 16th century Palacio Escoriaza Esquibel.  This area is a favourite haunt of youngsters , the narrow alleys are lined with bars and the atmosphere is buzzing.  There are a number of museums in Vitoria including the Museo de Arqueologia a 16th century half timbered house.  Exhibits include Roman statues from  Álvea and medieval artefacts.
