BILBAO
Bilbao is the
industrial centre of the Basque country. It sprawls
16kms along the banks of the Rio Nervíon to its estuary. There are
some ornate bridges crossing the Nervíon, notably the Puente
Colgante built in 1893 which is made from wrought iron and the
modern Puente Calvatra. The mining of iron ore in the area during
the 19th century contributed to the prosperity of the city which has
continued to the present day. Bilbao like many industrial
towns and cities cannot be said to be attractive but there are
some areas which are worth viewing. The old town Cusco Viejo
has a cathedral , archeological museums, tapas bars and restaurants
and is a favourite with the locals on warm summer evenings.
