MAHÓN
Mahón or Maó, is
the island's capital and home to the airport. It is an elegant
town with a number of Georgian style houses, testimony to the
island's colonial past. The British occupied Mahón three times
in the 1800's. The harbour is one of the town's major
attractions, it is reputed to be one of the finest ports in Spain.
From the port area the town is accessed by fairly steep streets at
the top of which is the Eglesia del Carme a former Carmelite church.
