MAJORCAN WINE
The wine of
Majorca is little known outside the island. Wine has been
produced on Majorca for centuries mostly in the region of
Binissalem in the centre of the island shielded by the
Taramuntana mountains. The grapes used are mostly indigenous to
the region and include varieties like Manto Negro, Callet and
Prensal Blanc. The resulting wines are reds, whites and rose.
At the moment 95% of Majorcan wine is sold within Majorca. Wine
production is mostly small scale. Family run business are
the norm and unlike Spanish wine from the mainland
Majorcan wine production is not a large commercial undertaking.
The undoubted quality of some Majorcan wines has recently raised
interest from importers.
New production methods to increase production and quality have
already been installed in some wineries
and it seems increasingly likely that before long an
entrepreneurial producer will start to satisfy the demand and
Majorcan wine will start to appear outside the island.
