CABRERA MAJORCA (MALLORCA)

CABRERA

Cabrera is a national park made up of 19 small islands. It is situated off the south coast of Majorca and is accessible by boat from  Colònia de Sant Jordi or Portopetro.  The trip takes about an hour. Permission is needed if a private boat is used and also if an overnight stay at anchor is required.

On a hill stands Cabrera castle, overlooking the surrounding area.  Tourist trips to the islands are available throughout the summer from Colonia Sant Jordi but the number of visitors allowed is limited to 200 per day.  As well as the castle, there is a museum and a small beach.  The sea is a deep azure turning to pale turquoise near the beach.  This are is protected and there is no fishing allowed.  Deep sea diving is supposed to be particularly good here.  There are a species of lizard which live on the islands that have slightly different characteristics to those found on the mainland and are found nowhere else.  There are plenty of seabirds and other species to be found.  On the trip back the boat diverts to Sa Cova Blava or blue cave and trippers are permitted to swim in the crystal clear water.
