Binissalem is
an inland town approx 12kms from Palma. The area is the main
wine producing region of the island. Of the fifteen vineyards
the largest producer is probably the Bodega de Jose Luis
Ferrer, situated on the southern tip of Binissalem. Most of the
vineyards have shops where you can sample the wine before
buying. The area is protected from the wind by the Tramuntana
mountains which produces an ideal climate for grape growing.
Most of the wine is made from the
Manto Negro, Callet , Prensal
Blanc, Syrah and Merlot grape varieties. The area produces D.O
(Denomination of Origin) wines which means the production has
undergone rigorous testing and quality control checks. There are
whites, reds and rose wines available, some of which are
becoming recognised for their quality. The reds available can be
young or aged in oak barrels (crianza) and there are vintage,
reserve and gran reserves available. The ageing for some
of these reds has to conform with certain standards.
Vintage wine has to develop for at least two years, six months
of which must be in the barrel. Reserve has to be aged for
three years at least one year of which is in the barrel and Gran
reserve for a minimum of five years with eighteen months in the
barrel. Unfortunately, the wine is extremely hard to find
outside the island. If you sample any of Majorca's
regional food, it will probably be accompanied by wine from this
region. Binissalem is dominated by the Gothic church of Santa
Maria de Robines. Apart from being Majorca's main
wine producing area, the town is a bit off the beaten track for
the majority of tourists, it dates back to the time of the
Romans and was occupied by the Moors during the invasion of
Majorca. Binissalem is a twenty minute drive from the capital
Palma.
