Arta is
situated close to the northeast coast of Majorca. It has a
14th century sanctuary (Sant Salvador) at the top of a long
flight of steps which was built on the site of Moorish
remains. The views from the top are well worth the walk
up. The town itself is typically Majorcan with clusters of
small houses and narrow streets. Arta has a population of
approx 6000, there is a cultural centre which was built in 2001
which is home to the town's cinema. In the early 19th
century, an outbreak of bubonic plague, killed over twelve
hundred of the town's population, this was the last recorded
outbreak of bubonic plague in Europe. Well worth a visit,
Arta has some restaurants specialising in typical
Majorcan cuisine. If you visit during the summer months, try to
arrive before midday when the shops are still open and the heat
isn't too oppressive.
Getting to your hotel or
apartment from Palma airport by taxi can be expensive, nowadays
and will probably take a hefty chunk out of your spends. If
you're anything like me, you'd rather be spending it on a couple
of nice meals. Luckily there is an alternative,
Resorthoppa
have a private shuttle bus
service from the airport to your hotel or for as little as
£11.13 each (checked Sept 2008). If you'd like to see what
other people think of the Resorthoppa service, you can
