Taramundi is a
small town in the remote district of Oscos near the border with
Galicia. The tourist centre in Taramundi organises four wheel
vehicle tours through the regions forest areas. Taramundi is
well known for its wrought iron work. The Romans mined for
iron ore in the area and since Roman times craftsmen have become
skilled in the art of iron work. The village contains a number
of forges producing wrought iron and knives which have beautifully
decorated wooden handles. Taramundi is surrounded by lush
countryside mountains, rivers and waterfalls. It has a feel a
bit like some of the remoter parts of the lake district in the UK
and you have to remind yourself that you are in Spain.
