OVIEDO
A University city, Oviedo is the
capital city of Asturias. Since the introduction of coal mines
nearby in the18th century, it has played an important role in the
area's industry. The city dates back to medieval times with
many fine examples of pre Romanesque architecture, including the
Iglesia de San Tirso. The Gothic cathedral contains the tombs
of some Asturian kings as well as the spectacular "cross of the
angels" a 9th century solid gold and silver cross studded with
precious stones. There are two worthwhile museums in Oviedo,
the Bellas Artes which contains some good
portraits of Spanish royalty and the Museo Arqueológico which houses
Roman, Romanesque and pre historic artifacts.
