FIESTAS
As in most of Spain, Asturias has
its fair share of fiestas although nothing like as many as some of
the towns and cities further south. Because Asturias was not
occupied by the Moors, the region does not have the same Moors and
Christians fiestas held in many other parts of Spain. One of the
main fiestas La fiesta de la ascension is held every May in
many towns and villages notably Oviedo where amongst the
festivities, you can find bull fights, plays, a cattle competition
and stalls selling everything from honey to tortillas. The
locals all dress in regional costumes and medieval musicians parade
through the cobbled streets which have been strewn with straw.
Between the 19th and 21st of
September are the fiestas de San Mateo which feature a large parade.
The El Desarme festival on the
19th October is a celebration of the area's gastronomy. Each
year a menu del dia (menu of the day) is chosen which is then served
by all the restaurants and street vendors. This consists of a
first course of Fabada, the famous bean stew, followed by tripe.
There are many other small fiestas
held in the towns and villages of Asturias celebrating mostly
religious events. Many fiestas seem to be an excuse to let off
as many bangers as possible without any particular theme.
