Aviles is the
industrial capital of Asturias. Large factories ring the outskirts
of the city which is the region's largest steel producer. The
new town has little to offer tourists however there is a medieval
centre which is well worth a visit. There are lots of interesting
and historic houses in the old part of Aviles many dating back
hundreds of years. Walking down narrow streets it is
surprising to enter into large squares which are a great place for
taking in the atmosphere over a cup of coffee. There are a few
churches worth a mention, the church of San Fransisco is decorated
with ancient frescos. The 14th century church of San Nicolás
is also interesting, it contains the tomb of the first governor of
the state of Florida in the United States.
