Zaragoza is the regional capital of Aragon. It started life as
a Celtiberian settlement called Salduba. The Romans then
settled in the area and it became known by the Roman name Cesar
Augusta. Built on the banks of the River Ebro, the fertile
banks provided the city with an abundance of food, enabling it to
grow into what is now Spain's fifth largest city. Zaragoza
suffered badly in Spain's war of independence and was extensively
rebuilt. Some of the earlier remains survived the war, the
most impressive being the Basillica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar.
Some of the city's Roman walls are still standing opposite the Plaza
del Pilate. There are other historic places of interest worth
visiting including churches and museums.
