Aragon is a large producer of wine and has been
for centuries. The wines were once renowned for their strength
and were often shipped abroad to fortify some of the weaker wines
from other areas. The wines were supplied in bulk and not
noted for their quality. Things have now changed, and
with modern production techniques and different grape varieties,
exciting wines are starting to appear. The revolution started
in the area of Samontano, a little known wine producing area
nestling in the shade of the Pyrenees. From nowhere prior to
1980, this region now produces outstanding reds whites and rosés
which have put the wine of Aragon at the forefront of the new
Spanish wine revolution. Before Samontano came to providence,
the southern area around Zaragoza was the region's main wine
producer, The wines from this area were made from the Carinena
grape. These grapes produce strong full bodied reds.
Experimentation is king when it comes to wine production in
many parts of Spain and Aragon is no exception. Anything goes
nowadays and many different grape varieties are being tried in lots
of areas not normally associated with wine production.
Spanish wine is evolving rapidly and areas not heard of a few years
ago are now starting to gain reputations for some very
acceptable wine.
