In
the centre of the Pyrenees lies the beautiful Aragon valley in the
Huesca province. It is home to a number of picturesque towns and
villages. One of these places is the city of Jaca, it dates
back to the 2nd century AD and is famous for repulsing an
invading Moorish army in the 8th century, this brave act is
celebrated every year in the festival of La Victoria. In 1035
Jaca became the first capital of the kingdom of Aragon. Jaca
is home to one of the oldest cathedrals in Spain dating back to the
11th century. Jaca's main
source of income these days is the tourist industry which is
expanding rapidly in the north of Spain. Jaca would make an
ideal base for anybody wishing to take advantage of the many
sporting facilities in the region. There is skiing,
snowboarding, pony trekking and horse riding, not to forget some
fantastic walking. There are plenty hotels and some great
restaurants and bars to while away the evenings in.

ROUNDABOUT
IN
JACA
Many parts of Spain, from having no roundabouts,
have now embraced them in a big way. Unlike other parts of
Europe where the roundabout is seen as purely functional, Spain uses
them to display all manner of flora, fauna and sculptures.
Jaca has a roundabout on the main road leading into the city, which
must be the most flamboyant of them all. Topping tall plinths
which are adorned in metal sculptures of instruments, are beautiful
dancing figures.
