SPANISH FIESTAS
Fiestas are a part
of Spanish life. Spaniards love their fiestas and Andalucia is
no exception. There are fiestas all over Andalucia celebrating
everything form Saints to food. Almost every month sees a
fiesta in towns and cities all over the region. Many of the
fiestas are to celebrate the defeat of the Moors and the re conquest
of Spain by the Christians. Moors and Christians fiestas are
held throughout Spain at different times of the year and to
celebrate various battles. Andalucia was the last
bastion of the Moors and some of the best spectacles can be seen in
the region. Some of the smaller fiestas seem to be an excuse
for eating, drinking and letting off fireworks. It isn't
unusual to be woken a six o clock in the morning by a huge bang to
mark the start of a fiesta. Spaniards love to have fun and the
fiesta is a reflection of their customs and culture. One of
the biggest fiestas throughout Spain takes place on the 22nd of
June. St Juan is usually celebrated with bonfires barbeques and
firework displays and in coastal areas ends with a midnight dip to
bring luck for the coming year.
