ANDALUCIA
Of all the regions
of Spain, Andalucia, the land of the flamenco and the bullring is
probably the most evocative. Andalucia is the second
largest region of Spain, it is home to the
Costa del Sol and major
historical cities such as
Granada,
Seville and
Cordoba. This area is
steeped in history, the last bastion of the Moors before they were
defeated by the the troops of Ferdinand and Isabella at Granada in
1492. The Moorish past is well preserved in Granada and
Cordoba, the most famous remains being the fantastic
Alhamabra Palace just outside
the city of Granada. The history of Andalucia stretches back
long before the Moors dating back to pre Roman times. The
area around Granada, Cordoba and Seville is known as the oven of
Spain. In the summer months, temperatures can soar past 40c.

More recently, the coastal area of the
Costa del Sol has seen the
birth of the tourist industry and with the arrival of the budget
airlines, Andalucia has become one of the most popular holiday
destinations in mainland Spain. Andalucia is a land of
contrasts, within a couple of hours drive, you can be transported
from the ski slopes of the Sierra Nevada's to the sweltering heat of
the Costa beaches
